So you’re sitting at a red light watching cars turn left in front of you when one last car squeezes through and you see the flash of the camera, well say cheese! There are red light cameras all over the country and there are many of them in NYC! You can look here for a map of where they are.

In NY a red light camera takes photographs of motorists who disobey red lights and then sends them a ticket in the mail and assesses a $50+ fine (plus $4 processing fee for credit card payments). Luckily points are NOT assessed for these infractions and they are NOT reported to auto insurance companies.

In actuality the red light camera takes a picture of the license plate and sends it to the registered car owner, so if you are driving a friends car and run a red they will get the ticket! There has been controversy over the fact that the right people aren’t necessarily getting the right tickets. Stay tuned to a future blog about camera controversy.
