This is Ruthie Alcaide. She was on MtV’s 8th season of The Real World (Hawaii). Ruthie was filmed driving drunk, back to the MTV house from a bar.

On A&E’s Intervention there are numerous shots of the focus of that weeks show behind the wheel under the influence of drugs and or alcohol.

Did you know there was a show called D.U.I on TLC?

Look I studied film in college and I understand the dilemma that producers face when making a reality show and not getting involved in documenting “reality” but where does one draw the line? What kind of messages are networks sending when they don’t do anything?

In the case of MTV and Ruthie they gave her the choice of leaving the show or going to rehab. On Intervention the main goal is to get the subject to agree to go to rehab and D.U.I. is a police show, think cops but only focusing on drunk/drugged driving arrests.

Drunk driving is a serious issue in our country. According to NHTSA, every two minutes, a person is injured in a drunk driving crash. Every day in America, another 28 people die as a result of drunk driving crashes. In 2013, 10,076 people died in drunk driving crashes – one every 52 minutes – and 290,000 were injured in drunk driving crashes.
