Trucks & Buses can be intimidating and even frightening but did you know that passenger vehicles are at fault in over 80% of accidents between cars and semi trucks. Here are 5 tips and some videos that can help you avoid collisions! Take our online class for more detailed info.
1) Avoid Blind Spots
Trucks & Buses have blind spots on both sides, if you can’t see the drivers face in their side view mirror then they can’t see you!
2) Don’t tailgate
Unlike cars, trucks and buses have huge NO-ZONES directly behind them. The truck or bus driver can’t see your car back there, and you can’t see what’s going on ahead of you. If the truck or bus driver brakes suddenly, you have no place to go.
3) Pass Safely
Always pass on the LEFT. Don’t cut in too soon after passing. Truck and bus drivers need twice the time and space to stop as smaller passenger vehicles. Look for the whole front of the truck or bus in your rear-view mirror before pulling in front and don’t slow down!
4) Pay Closer Attention
Never cross behind a truck that is backing up. Truck drivers do not have a rear-view mirror and may not see you cutting in behind them.
5) Avoid the “Squeeze Play”
Truck and bus drivers sometimes need to swing wide to the left to safely make a right turn. They can’t see cars squeezing in between them and the curb. Watch for their turn signals and give them room to turn.
