So last night I wasn’t feeling well and decided to watch some mind numbing TV. MTV’s Teen Mom OG, for those of you who don’t know this show follows the original girls from 16 and pregnant 5 years on. What does this have to do with defensive driving, let alone driving at all you may be asking yourself. Well there was a scene where Farrah Abraham and her boyfriend Simon Saran are driving in the car and he is texting while driving. Just to be clear this is not a TV drama this is “reality” TV.

What is the big deal you may be asking yourself? Well texting while driving is a big deal and the fact that MTV decided to air someone texting while driving is an even bigger deal! Sending or reading a text takes your eyes off the road for 4.6 seconds. At 55 mph, that’s like driving the length of an entire football field, blindfolded. When MTV condones this type of behavior by not saying anything about it, they didn’t even show an anti texting while driving PSA during the show they are sending the wrong message! The only thing that was said was Farrah asking him if he wanted help texting. The next scene he proceeded to do some more distracted driving that I won’t mention here…….

Most U.S. states now have bans on texting while driving, and those laws may be preventing some serious traffic accidents, a new study suggests.
Researchers found that car-crash hospitalizations dipped in states that instituted relatively strict bans on texting and driving between 2003 and 2010.

Right now, 45 states and Washington, D.C., ban all drivers from texting, according to the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA), which represents state highway safety agencies. Here in NY if you are caught texting while driving it is an automatic 5 points on your license!
