We just had our first major snow storm of the winter and there was plenty of ice and snow. Many people came out to cars covered in it. We all know it’s a pain to stand out in the cold cleaning off your car, BUT did you know that it’s against the law to drive with snow and ice on your car!?

Why Clean Your Car? Could Ice and snow be dangerous……

Well the 1st and most obvious reason is so that you can see! You need to clean and scrape your windshield and back window. You also need to make sure that your headlights and mirrors are clear. Some people would think this is good enough but guess what? WRONG!

What about other cars?

Have you ever been driving behind someone in the winter when a huge sheet of ice comes flying off their car or what seems like a snow drift? THIS IS WHY YOU HAVE TO CLEAN YOUR CAR!!!! If you don’t you can get a ticket that has a hefty fine! Here’s all the legalese for ya:

S 1229-E. CLEARANCE OF SNOW, SLEET, AND HAIL.
1. NO PERSON SHALL OPERATE A MOTOR VEHICLE ON A PUBLIC STREET OR HIGHWAY WHILE THERE IS AN ACCUMULATION OF SNOW, SLEET, OR HAIL ON THE ROOF OR CARGO BED SURFACES THEREOF, WHETHER OF ANY OCCUPANT COMPARTMENT, TRAILER, OR OTHER CARGO COMPARTMENT IN EXCESS OF THREE INCHES.
2. THE REMOVAL OF ACCUMULATED SNOW, SLEET, OR HAIL REQUIRED BY SUBDIVISION ONE OF THIS SECTION SHALL NOT APPLY DURING THE FALLING OF SNOW, SLEET, OR HAIL OR WITHIN THREE HOURS AFTER THE CESSATION OF THE FALLINGTHEREOF.
3. (A) THE OPERATOR OF A NON-COMMERCIAL VEHICLE IN VIOLATION OF THE
PROVISIONS OF THIS SECTION, EXCLUDING A DISABLED OPERATOR, SHALL BE
SUBJECT TO A FINE OF NOT LESS THAN ONE HUNDRED FIFTY DOLLARS NOR MORE THAN EIGHT HUNDRED FIFTY DOLLARS.

Now no one wants to pay that fine or worse be liable for the property damage to another persons car. Just yesterday a windshield was smashed on the Taconic from ice coming from another vehicle. You don’t want to do this to another persons car or have it done to yours!
